Literary: Privacy Policy

This policy applies to all information potentially collected or submitted using the Literary iOS speed-reading application.

Information we collect

All collected information is stored within a local database that resides on your iOS device, inside the segregated sandbox of the Literary app, and is never forwarded to a remote server, external company, or analyzed remotely.

Literary accumulates user reading data including reading speed, total time spent reading, session lengths, reading position within the book, words and pages read. Additionally, Literary stores information about each of the synched books such as number of words, pages, sentences, chapter size in bytes, title, and author.

Your reading data belongs to you.  Your reading habits are your own. We are only interested in storing this data on your device to assist you on your speed-reading journey with useful graphing capabilities within the app, to maintain your preferred settings and reading position in your books, and to operate the inherent controls for reading.

If the application is deleted off of the device, all the collected data will be deleted as well, thus, making you in complete control over your own data.  Be careful, if you accidentally delete the app all of your historical reading data will be deleted and is unrecoverable.

Technical basics

Literary does not require account creation or login to access the app. No information gathered and stored locally during normal operation of the app is correlated with any account that could be used to uniquely identify an individual.

When you load an EPUB book into Literary it is parsed to collect only the data required to make playback and graphing function properly.  The book is assessed by chapter to get a total word count, to divide each section into sentences and paragraphs, and to obtain pertinent information from the EPUB for rendering display and controls, such as title/author name, percent complete, total size of each chapter, and page content for book playback.

These details are stored in the local database in the app. When you open one of your books, the database is queried for the requisite information to open the book and operate the application.

Dropbox and Google Drive

For ease of use, Dropbox and Google Drive are integrated into Literary to make synching books easier.  You may sync your books via iTunes and never need to login to these accounts.  Granting permission to the Literary app to access your Dropbox or Google Drive account gives you the capability of getting new books directly into the app without being tethered to a laptop or waiting for device backup.   In other words, you can use Dropbox and Drive but are not required to use them.

The official Dropbox and Google APIs are used by Literary to login into the respective services.  The login flow is performed via Safari outside the purview of the application code.  In other words, no account username or passwords are accessible to Literary code.

During the application login flow, the user is prompted for a set of permissions to allow Literary access to your preferred cloud storage.

Once the permissions have been granted for Dropbox, Literary calls the Dropbox APIs to create a folder in the service named Apps and a subfolder named Literary.  Books you want to sync need to be placed in this folder because the app only has access to read the EPUB files in the folder it created.

After granting permissions to Google Drive, a folder named LiteraryApp followed by a random 8 digit number is created.  You may organize your books for synching in this folder.

In both cases, the cloud drives are scanned for files with the EPUB filetype only, no other files are pulled into the app for synching or for any other reason.  No data about your the files in these services is scanned, stored, or used for any purpose other than displaying to you all the EPUB files you own for you to select and download to the app.

No files are downloaded to the application unless the user specifically makes that request.

Social Media

We do not connect Literary to any social media sites such as Twitter or Facebook.

Ads and analytics

Literary is not for-profit and we do not currently present ads to the end user.  We also do not use analytics code to process how you use the app or send data to third-parties for processing.

Information usage

We do not collect user data for processing remotely.  Your application data is only used to operate Literary and is entirely stored within the app inside a database.  All the collected information stored in the application database will be lost if the application is deleted.

We may disclose information in response to subpoenas, court orders, or other legal requirements; to exercise our legal rights or defend against legal claims; to investigate, prevent, or take action regarding illegal activities, suspected fraud or abuse, violations of our policies; or to protect our rights and property.

In the future, we may sell to, buy, merge with, or partner with other businesses. In such transactions if decisions are made to collect user data the application will be updated along with the privacy policy.  You may review those changes at that time and decide how to proceed.

Security

Literary was not written to require the use of any user accounts, none of your Literary application data is sent to remote servers, and it is only stored in a local database accessible to Literary.  Thus, Literary relies on the security inherent to the iOS operating system.

As it relates to your Dropbox and Google Drive logins flows, the official APIs are called, both using OAuth via Safari outside of the context of Literary.  As before, iOS security, such as HTTPS encryption, is relied on as well as the security mechanisms of the Dropbox and Google Drive APIs and the security on those websites.
